A Ministry for Social Change

Founder's Brief Auto Biography

Growing up I had a very rough child hood, a child hood that would reflect the harshness experienced in third world countries. In brief, I grow up in a South West Philadelphia Housing Project and experienced several challenges that were all too brutal for an adolescent to undertake. To name just a few of these things, I saw the attempted assassination of my father at the age of 4 by the local drug dealers; I have experienced living in a single parent home where many nights my sibling and I had no food to eat; at age 11 I lost my mother to a spontaneous heart attack and experienced homelessness growing up in the "school of hard knocks" having to provide a way to sustain myself well before my teen years. Through this time period of fending for myself in a world that makes hiring a child at that age illegal I have participated criminal activities to be able to suffice as a growing adolescent with a huge appetite and no legal income. However, as soon as I was eligible for a working permit I took advantage getting a job and kept a job to survive for I was no stranger to back breaking work at an earl age.

Through it all I promised myself in silence that I would and could help other young men that lived in the urban environment and I would ensure they would not feel the pain of being unsupported in a world that we all know is extremely competitive. In the year 2001 in the midst of my desperate cry for help I found comfort in giving my life to Christ and vowed to use all the strength that I am blessed with to give back to the community. In August of 2003 I began my freshman year at Kutztown University and with many prayers and constant academic work I graduated in August 2007 with my Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice. In October of 2007 I returned to Philadelphia to begin working and planning a way to give back to my community. In February of 2010 I was blessed with a vision of exactly what I have always desired to do, the vision was Building Boys To Men.

My Findings

I found that many of the challenges I faced that distracted me from having a better child hood was not unique to my life alone. Many young men that are urban and poverty dwellers fall victim to immersing themselves in to the delinquent subculture for monetary gain often to feed themselves and sibling that come from broken homes. A high percentage of young men in urban areas are disenfranchised young men that are products of and subject to underfunded schools and living conditions. This made me wonder if a program the targets young men in the school as well as the community they live in would be a remedy for many issues that exist within these environments?

I noted and felt that a program providing help for these young men would most likely reverse the cancers facing these young men and help change negativity in their lives. The catalyst for such change is embedded in Academic Enrichment, Community Service as well as Family Assistance. I believe both components will increase the number of productive young men that reside in urban environments because if “idle hands are the devils workshop”, “busy hands are the Lord's workshop”. Academic Enrichment in the form of one-to-one tutoring, career oriented workshops, standardized test preparation, and direct career exposure, are things that are needed in schools that a successful program should provide. Community Service in the form of community clean-ups, academic workshops for parents, mentoring, elderly assistance, common law comprehension workshops, hospitality training, food drives and fitness/health programs will be components used to increase participant’s civic engagement and community attachment. A program combining these two elements will enhance the positive citizenship of its participants and bring positive change to their Community, Schools, and lives as a whole.

The Formation of a Solution

While the things stated above are things that are 2nd stage and more advanced abstract ideas of what will be done in the program in the near future. Equally if not more importantly is what is the program doing right now. Firstly, the name given to this work that needed to begin and is now in process stuck in my head as, “building boys to men” and in early 2010 after making the decision to begin standing up for urban young men like myself I incorporated the name. The current mission of this organization is as follows:

Building Boys To Men Incorporated is a nonprofit tax exempt 501(c)(3) charitable organization and ministry with a mission to provide academic enrichment and community service opportunities for young men living in urban environments. BBTM also assists with employment, fitness and common law legalese assistance.

Goals and Objectives

Goal 1: Provide urban community with free for all fitness club

Objective 1: To give young men and their families an avenue to release positive energy while participating in healthy exercise

Goal 2: Provide Elderly and Sickly with assistance services

Objective 2: To give young men and their families a community service opportunity and bridge the generational gap between the old and the young.

Goal 3: Provide homeless and hungry with services

Objective 3: To give young men and their families an avenue to give to others as a practice of responsibility and civility.

Goal 4: Provide businesses with hospitality services

Objective 4: To give everyone an opportunity to participate in local business as a volunteer service to get those whom are unemployed active as well as bridge the gap and form relationships between businesses and themselves.

Goal 5: Provide youth and families with common law information

Objective 5: To assist families with issues that govern contract language that may be difficult for families to understand, especially those with limited knowledge of the law (Building Boys To Men Incorporated Common Law Project).

Goal 6: Provide community with brighter smiles

Objective 6: To assist families and community members with plaque reduction and oral hygiene support(brushing, flossing, partnering with a DMD). We believe if people are doing more smiling then they are creating positive energy necessary to begin progress in their community. We believe that each smile adds a moment on to a persons life ( Building Boys To Men Incorporated, Brighter Smiles Project).

Since the formation of Building Boys To Men Inc. (BBTM) began in 2010 all of the work has been volunteer work conducted by myself and several friends that have similar backgrounds and care for the community. Our goal is to make what we have done thus far in terms of mentoring young men and helping a few of them along the way a greater mission.
